CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take as requirements in the first two years of college. A college usually grants the same amount of credit to students earning satisfactory scores on the CLEP examination as it grants to students successfully completing that course.
Many examinations are designed to correspond to one-semester courses; some, however correspond to full-year or two-year courses. Unless stated otherwise in its description, an examination is intended to cover material in a one-semester course.
Each exam is 90 minutes long, and, except for English Composition with Essay, is made up primarily of multiple-choice questions; however, some exams do have fill-ins.
The CLEP exams are very easy to study for, they are taken right from the course structure of introductory college courses. The CLEP exams are some of the most common required courses and so easy to locate study materials. The audio lectures at your local library are perfect for listening to during your commute.
On subjects that you are familiar with a quick scan of refresher materials may be enough. The true target of these exams is to measure introductory college course mastery. If you have just completed an advanced curriculum in high school I recommend taking these exams right away. You can move right to sophomore standing in no time at all. A move that brings you a step away from student loans and closer to the job market will never be regretted by anyone.
Military members can test free, contact the College Board for details.
